Interview with Selma James on Democracy Now

Recently on Democracy Now Amy Goodman  (amazing journalist I must add) interviewed Selma James  who brought forth the issue of Housework as Unwaged Labor. The interview begins with a discussion of the recent  comments Hilary Rosen had regarding Ann Romney's work, explaining that Ann Romney doesn't have the knowledge to discuss the issues of women and work. Though Romney in another interview explained that raising 5children was a full time job in itself. The interview also discusses the importance of every movement coming together and building unity while at the same time holding an autonomous stance. Goodwin also asked James about the Slutwalk movement in which James answered with positive attributes.
Here's a link to the interview and a small transcript regarding James' thoughts on Slutwalk.

AMY GOODMAN: Selma James, you wrote recently about SlutWalk.
SELMA JAMES: Yes.
AMY GOODMAN: Slut is a big conversation in the United States now, because Rush Limbaugh, one of the right-wing radio talk show hosts, who plays such a major role in the Republican Party, called a young law student who was calling for health insurance coverage of contraceptives, he called her a "slut" and a "whore," a "prostitute" who should have sex videos. She should have to put—post sex videos of herself online. And it has caused many, even of his past supporters, to stop supporting him for saying this. Why do you talk about SlutWalk?
SELMA JAMES: Well, you know—you know the long—you know "Death, where is thy sting?" You know, what the SlutWalk women did was to make it impossible to use those words in a way that is hurtful and insulting. I was astonished by the march. I went on the SlutWalk march. First of all, it was started by a 16-year-old who had had enough of women being raped and the police not paying attention, and who had refused, like women everywhere, to accept that if we dress a particular way or if we speak a particular way or if we do a particular thing, we can be accused. She said, "Accuse us as you like. We accept it all, and we then refuse everything that you accuse us of." So, they were very anti-racist. They were very pro-prostitute. They were very anti-rape. They were very diverse. And they were the new women’s movement. They were very young.
And I didn’t feel, walking with them, that I was surrounded by women who were ambitious. I think that’s really crucial in the women’s movement today, because a lot of feminism has gone into individual careers and into ambition, and there’s some evidence that the class line between women is much greater now with feminism, because a whole set of women have gone into the part of the elite. They get pay equity. They get a lot of kudos, a lot of—they are very accepted in the society. And the rest of us are getting screwed. I mean, our pay is not going up. The child care doesn’t exist or is very bad. Welfare has been abolished. And we really need to have another reason to be together, which is the real conditions of our lives, rather than an individual ambition. And I felt that the SlutWalk was part of that new movement, which says it’s not ambition we want. We want to have the freedom to live the lives as we like them, and we are together for that.
AMY GOODMAN: Selma James, activist, political thinker, writer, the founder of International Wages for Housework Campaign, she helped launch the Global Women’s Strike. She is the author of numerous publications, including, most recently, Sex, Race and Class—The Perspective of Winning: A Selection of Writings 1952-2011. She was married for years to the West Indian political philosopher, activist and writer, C.L.R. James. And that does it for our show. Hookers Ball 2012

This is a video of the Hookers Ball from the previous Saturday from Tony De Renzo's youtube channel SF City Watch. Overall the event was so much fun and well put together. All of the bands were great and had a lot of energy. Also in attendance were The Dancefloorjunkiedolls from Reno who entertained the crowd with some sexy routines.
Here's a link to a gallery of the event also provided by Tony De Renzo.

Upcoming Marches/Events in April

Her are some upcoming events in April around the Bay Area and in Sacramento that are definitely worth checking out and supporting. If any of you know of any other events/fundraisers please post up the recommendations on the comments section.

Saturday April 14th is the "Hookers Ball," sponsored by the Harvey Milk Democratic Club, to benefit the Erotic Services Providers Union. Here's a picture of the flyer for the event. The ESPU is a great organization which seeks to gain rights for sex workers through associating with organized labor and change legislation through methods of direct action to stop the discrimination of sex workers. Last year Slutwalk had an amazing speaker form the ESPU come and talk about her job to the crowd. Here is a link to the website which has of a vast amount of information on sex work and gaining legislation for "anti-discrimination" laws towards sex workers. http://espu-ca.org/wp/
(information found on the website).

Saturday April 28th, SFWAR (San Francisco Women Against Rape) is having it's annual walk against Rape. This is the the 7th year for the walk. Registration and Line starts at 10am. The line begins at the Women's Building and the walk will begin at 11am. SF WAR has done great work around the Bay Area and each year host a walk to raise awareness on rape, rape culture, and violence towards women. Here is a link to the site, http://www.sfwar.org/walk/index.html

Saturday April 28th is also the "Unite Against the War on Women," in Sacramento. We will meet on the capitol steps at 11 am and there will be an afternoon rally at Fremont Park on 16th and P Streets. This is in response to the state and governments attacks on women's reproductive rights, birth control, abortion, and many states plans to cut funding's for Planned Parenthood. Updates and Upcoming Events

Hello, Everyone!

It’s been a while since the last blog entry, so it would be a good time to update everyone on what is to come this year. I’ll first start off by introducing myself. My name is Mari and I’m new to blogging for SlutWalk SF. I first heard of SlutWalk last summer from my roommate who helped me realize that I, myself, am a Feminist. For a while I rejected that term because, being a woman of color, I felt that my experience was being overlooked. I took a women’s herstory class my first year of college at SFSU, which I enjoyed, but I was upset to learn about the racism and homophobia present in many of the groups we’ve come to learn about when we discuss Feminism.

As I grow older, and read more Feminist and Queer theory and works by women such as Angela Davis and Emma Goldman, I’m proud to say that I’m a radical, sex-positive, bisexual Feminist. It’s important to learn from the mistakes of past Feminist movements and see how we can move forward. Though it is important to shed light on the negative aspects of the past waves of Feminism, let’s not forget the accomplishments they made for us today. I hope our we can educate more people through this blog and through the events we have planned out as well so as to inspire women and men to call themselves Feminist.  Anyone who was born from a woman should be a Feminist.

Will try to keep this blog updated, if not daily, weekly with essay, book, and film reviews as well as posting interesting articles and current events. I recommend for everyone to read as many news publications as possible to be educated on the issues of birth control, abortion, family planning, and reproductive health rights.

Currently, I’m reading Emma Goldman’s autobiography Living My Life, which I highly recommend and once I’m finished I will definitely write a book review. Her insights on birth control, reproduction, and abortion are very interesting and the comments that she hears from fellow comrades in the medical industry are pretty close to the ideals the many have today of women, birth control, and so forth.

As for right now, I’ll shed some light on certain events we are planning:

SlutWalk will be August 4th, the first weekend in August, like last year. We are working on an art and variety show fundraiser for our permits, promo materials, and to make a donation to a bay area women's organization.  As well as planning to have an event after the march featuring feminist bands, musicians, and performers. If you are in a band or a performer and would like to participate please contact us.

Also if you know of anyone who would be great for this event let us know!

If anyone has any ideas let us know and if you’d like to help out, that would be great, too! Please contact any of us and someone will respond to you shortly.
Email to: HUMAN@SLUTWALKSFBAY.ORG

I hope all is well and I’ll write back soon.

Take care and much love,
Mari
